Minimum requirements: an internship requirement through an accredited university with completed coursework in leisure studies or related area and experience with computer programs such as Word, Excel, and Publisher. Abilities required: position requires individual to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to interact with youth and adults in various settings. The Adel Parks and Recreation Department is seeking applications for a summer 2012 internship. The internship will run through mid-August. The intern will assist in overseeing various summer recreation programs such as: Youth baseball, Youth softball, Adult sand volleyball, Adult slow-pitch softball, Youth volleyball, etc. Other duties may include but are not limited to: working with the City swimming pool, softball and baseball field concession operations, as well as general park maintenance. Adel, Iowa is located 15 miles west of the Des Moines metropolitan area with a growing population of 4,000+. The Parks and Recreation department began operations in October of 2007. The department consists of 2 full-time employees; Director of Parks and Recreation and Parks Superintendent, as well as 6 part-time Parks maintenance employees and numerous seasonal recreation and swimming pool employees. The department maintains 150+ acres of park land as well as one 50-site campground, 2 boat ramps, 3 cemeteries, 3 basketball courts, 3 sand vb courts, 2 tennis courts, 7 baseball/softball fields, a 9-hole disc golf course, 3+ miles of multi-use asphalt trails, a football field, and a soccer complex. Interns will gain an overall experience in the areas of program development and implementation, facility management, and park grounds maintenance.

CLIVE
Parks and Recreation
Summer Intern:
The City of Clive, Iowa seeks an individual for the summer 2012 Parks and Recreation Intern. Clive is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa and is regarded by many as one of the most desirable areas in the Des Moines metropolitan area.
Duties:
Working directly under the Recreation Supervisor, duties will include planning and coordinating recreation programs, administering programs, administrative duties, daily operations, assist with special events, and opportunity for park maintenance. The position will include a wide range of activities from Clive’s aquatic facility to youth through adult programming and leagues.
City Requirements
The ideal candidate will be a student who is currently majoring in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Studies, or related field. The intern must be sports/activity minded, and possess the ability and desire to work with people of all ages.
Rate of Pay
The rate of pay is $10.05 per hour.

Fort Dodge
Parks and Recreation Department
The City of Fort Dodge is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual for the Summer 2012 Parks and Recreation Intern position. This internship has standard job duties that are mandatory for the position, although every internship can be tailored specifically for the intern. Fort Dodge Parks and Recreation Department hosts 3 high school sport championships, one of the state’s largest municipal aquatic centers, a beautifully manicured 18-hole golf course, an eleven field sports complex, numerous exciting leagues and special events, and much more!
Our belief about internships is to provide a comprehensive and meaningful experience that provides the student an opportunity to learn through “real world” situations. We expect an intern to complete a minimum of 40 hours a week that encompasses days and nights, as well as weekends. Interns will be paid a stipend, which will be determined at the start of the internship.
Job Duties:

Assist with recreation programs (planning, marketing, scheduling, supervision, and customer/program evaluations). Programming includes preschool, youth and adult activities; youth sport leagues, mini camps, sport clinics and special events (dances, live music concerts, outdoor movies, etc).

Assist as needed in the office; developing phone etiquette, program financials, answering customer inquiries, using ActiveNet (online membership and registration system).

Assist with promotion of department programs and activities including: email/text updates, design program fliers, and assist with developing seasonal program guide.

Review revenue and expenditure budget procedures, fundraising programs/procedures and other administrative duties.

The city of Urbandale is seeking an individual for the Summer 2012 Parks and Recreation Intern position. Urbandale is a progressive and growing community of over 35,000 people. It is a suburb of Des Moines, located on northwest side, and is nestled between West Des Moines, Clive and Johnston.
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
We believe the internship should be a well-rounded, comprehensive experience that gives the student an opportunity to learn about all aspects of the recreation/leisure services and park departments. We understand that the intern must complete a minimum of 40 hours/week for 14 weeks (or equivalent).
Pay: $9 per hour
Duties:

Develop and implement a special project from beginning to end. The student will use all elements of program planning to successfully complete the project.

Assist with public relations and promotions of department programs and activities including: press releases, coordinate media coverage, develop customer friendly operating procedures, design program fliers and elements of program marketing, and assist with developing seasonal program guide.

Create and implement 3 new programs, for varying age groups, to be offered in the seasonal program guide.

Attend board meetings, staff meetings, and council meetings. Review budget procedures, contract management and other administrative duties.
